A documentary film about the origin, rapid growth and one of the most popular multi-billion dollar industries that brought our childhood to life by giving us Pac-man, Mario and so many other heroes today: VIDEO GAMES. The movie shows this fascinating journey through the eyes of the creators, publishers and consumers of today’s world.
As hard as it may seem to believe, there was once a time when the world had no idea that a few controllable images on a screen would change their life the way it has today. All this began in a small room at MIT in 1962 on the PDP-1(First Computer to utilize a visual display) by Martin Graetz, Steve Russell, and Wayne Wiitane, SpaceWar!. The game was created to demonstrate the capabilities of the PDP-1. Initially all the games used bit-map images using RGB raster. The more bits, the better the games look but it used up more memory which was in short supply back then, This was the reason the games looked blocky and simple. As the technology developed so did the games, going from 8-bit all the way to 2048-bit nowadays. Games went from being played on the computers and arcades to having a designated console just meant for gaming, like the XBOX, PlayStation, Nintendo Wii and so many more. today, games have reached almost every single platform out there but PC games still remain the most popular.
Just like books, movies and music, video games have become the greatest medium not just for entertainment but also for various other reasons like story narration, education, business and a means of socializing. Just like any other form of media, video games have a huge list of genres and sub-genres each factoring in the specific needs and tastes of the consumers. According to a survey by The Entertainment Software Association(ESA) in 2013, an Average male gamer has 16 years of game play and a female gamer has 12 years. The average age of a gamer is 30 and 47% of the gamers are female and these numbers have only been growing over time. 42% of game players believe that video games give them the most value for money compared to DVD’s, Theatre and Music. Amongst the most frequent gamers 15% are online gamers, 33% are mobile gamers and 25% play on a handheld device. 62% of the gamers play with other gamers either in person or online.
The movie includes a good number of interviews with a few famous creators and publisher like Nolan Bushnell(Co-Founder of Atari), Allan Alcorn(Creator of Pong), Reggie Fils-Aime(President of Nintendo), etc. The movie also has a few celebrities like Zach Braff, Will.i.am, Donald Fasion and many more who appear as consumers and provide their point of view on video games. Many clips of games like Mario, Pac-man, Tomb Raider, Street Fighter, etc are also included to keep the movie interesting.
Even though games have only been here for 50 years it has far surpassed every other media industry buy a huge margin. There are so many more ideas and technologies yet to be used for gaming. One such technology that has recently gotten a lot of attention is the VR Headsets which is a very promising field for the development of gaming. A lot of work goes into developing video games but it is equally fun and pays-well which makes it one of the best career options. So as far as I know,
VIDEO GAMES ARE HERE
AND
THEY ARE HERE TO STAY.
